Once upon a time, a princess was sick. Her father, the king, was very worried. Many people in the kingdom were also sick. The kingdom was sad and needed help.

A kind man named Maulana Ishak came to help. He used special herbs to make medicine. He made the princess and people better. He and the princess became good friends. They played and laughed together every day. They shared stories and helped each other.

The king got angry. He did not like Maulana Ishak. He wanted Maulana Ishak to go away from the kingdom. So Maulana Ishak left the kingdom to be safe. He said goodbye to the princess. The princess was sad to see him go. The kingdom missed Maulana Ishak's kindness.

Later, the princess had a baby boy. She loved him very much. To keep him safe, he was put in a chest on water. The chest floated on the river gently. A big ship found the chest and baby. The sailors were surprised and happy. The ship could not move until they took the chest. Then the ship sailed to a new home.

A kind woman named Nyai Ageng Pinatih found him. She was a merchant who lived by the sea. She loved him very much and named him Jaka Samudra. Jaka Samudra grew up to be a kind and curious boy. He helped Nyai Ageng Pinatih with her work. Jaka Samudra was a happy and smart child.

He went to a school with a wise teacher. The teacher was named Sunan Ampel. The teacher saw that Jaka Samudra was very special. Jaka Samudra learned to read and write. He also learned to be good to others. He made many friends at school.

One night, the teacher saw a light around Jaka Samudra. The light was bright and gentle. He learned Jaka Samudra's true name was Raden Paku. All were happy to know who he really was. They had a big celebration for him. All sang and danced for Raden Paku.

Raden Paku went on a long trip to find his father. He traveled over mountains and across seas. His father taught him to be kind and giving. He gave Raden Paku a special gift of soil. The soil was from a magical place. Raden Paku kept the soil safe in a bag.

Raden Paku went back home and helped people. He gave food and clothes to people in need. Good things happened because of his kindness. The more he gave, the more he had. His kindness spread to many villages.

He used the soil to find a perfect place. He searched for a long time. He built a school there to help many people. The school had many students. He became known as Sunan Giri, a great leader. He taught all to be kind and helpful. He helped people learn and grow.

Perjalanan Sunan Giri

Ikisah, pada zaman dahulu, kerajaan Blambangan diperintah oleh seorang raja

bernama Prabu Menak Sembuyu, Ia adalah keturunan Prabu Hayam Wuruk dari

kerajaan Majapahit. Raja dan rakyat kerajaan Blambangan memeluk agama Hindu

dan Budha.

Pada suatu hari Prabu Menak Sembuyu dan permaisurinya gelisah karena putrinya yang

bernama Dewi Sekardadu menderita sakit parah. Tidak seorang tabib atau dukun pun yang

sanggup mengobatinya. Pada saat itu pula, kerajaan Blambangan sedang dilanda musibah

yang namanya penyakit pagehlug. Hampir setiap hari ada korban yang meninggal dunia.

Pada saat itu, datanglah seorang penyebar Islam bernama Maulana Ishak. Prabu Menak

Sembuyu meminta tolong padanya dengan janji akan menjadikannya menantu jika berhasil

menghilangkan wabah. Maulana Ishak berjanji akan membantu dengan tambahan satu syarat

mereka harus masuk Islam. Prabu Menak Sembuyu menyetujui. Dengan izin Allah, Maulana

Ishak berhasil menghilangkan wabah penyakit dari bumi Blambangan. Ia pun segera

dinikahkan dengan Dewi Sekardadu.

Maulana Ishak semakin giat berdakwah menyebarkan agama Islam. Semakin lama

semakin banyak rakyat Blambangan mengikuti Maulana Ishak dan masuk agama Islam

sehingga membuat resah Prabu Menak Sembuyu dan para pembesar kerajaan. Atas hasutan

Patih Bajul Sengara, Prabu Menak Sembuyu semakin membenci Maulana Ishak. Melihat

keadaan yang tidak aman, Maulana Ishak pun minta izin Dewi Sekardadu yang sedang hamil

untuk kembali ke Samudra Pasai agar tidak jatuh korban orang lain. Dengan berat hati

Maulana Ishak meninggalkan istri tercinta yang lagi mengandung.

Sebelum kembali ke Pasai, Maulana Ishak menyempatkan diri singgah di Ampel

menceritakan perjalanannya selama di Blambangan dan berpesan jika bertemu dengan

anaknya dengan ciri-ciri yang disebutkan, supaya dididik dan diberi nama Raden Paku.

Kemudian Maulana Ishak meninggalkan Pulau Jawa kembali ke Pasai. Kepergiari Maulana

Ishak membuat geger rakyat Blambangan dan demi keselamatan janin yang ada dalam

kandungan, Dewi Sekardadu pun diboyong ke istana Blambangan.

Tidak lama kemudian Dewi Sekardadu melahirkan bayi laki-laki yang sangat tampan.

Prabu Menak Sembuyu dan permaisuri sangat senang atas kehadiran cucunya. Akan tetapi,

Prabu Menak Sembuyu termakan oleh hasutan Patih Bajul Sengara untuk membuang bayi itu

ke laut. Dewi Sekardadu sangat sedih mengetahui bayinya dihanyutkan ke laut. Dewi

Sekardadu mengikuti arus yang membawa peti sampai keberadaan peti itu hilang dari

pandangannya.

Peti berisi bayi itu ditemukan oleh sebuah kapal dagang yang sedang berlayar menuju

Selat Bali. Kapal itu mendadak tidak dapat bergerak karena terhalang oleh sebuah peti. Peti

itu diangkat dan setelah dibuka ternyata berisi bayi laki-laki yang sangat tampan. Ketika

hendak melanjutkan perjalanan, kapal tetap tidak bergerak sehingga mereka berbalik arah

kembali ke Gresik. Di luar dugaan, ternyata kapal dapat berjalan dengan lancar menuju

pelabuhan Gresik.

Pemilik kapal itu adalah Nyai Ageng Pinatih, seorang janda kaya raya di Gresik. Semula

ia marah karena kapalnya berbalik, tetapi setelah mengetahui apa yang terjadi, ia justru sangat

senang. Kebetulan ia tidak mempunyai putra sehingga bayi yang ditemukan oleh nakhoda

kapalnya itu diangkat menjadi putranya dan dinamai Jaka Samudra.

Nyai Ageng Pinatih adalah seorang muslimah yang baik. Walaupun Jaka Samudera

bukan anak kandungnya, dia merawat dan membesarkan Jaka Samudra dengan penuh kasih

sayang, terlebih lagi Jaka Samudra memiliki sifat yang saleh dan berbakti kepada ibunya.

Terhadap semua orang, Jaka Samudra selalu menunjukkan sikap baik.

Ketika berusia sebelas tahun, Nyai Ageng Pinatih mengantarkan Jaka Samudra untuk

berguru kepada Raden Rahmat atau Sunan Ampel di Pesantren Ampeldenta di Surabaya.

Setiap hari, Jaka Samudra melakukan perjalanan dari Gresik menuju Ampel di Surabaya

dengan tekun dan penuh kesabaran. Sunan Ampel merasa kasihan melihat Jaka Samudra

setiap hari melakukan perjalanan jauh, maka Sunan Ampel menyarankan untuk tinggal di

Pesantren Ampeldenta supaya lebih konsentrasi pada pelajaran.

Beberapa minggu tinggal di pesantren, Sunan Ampel sudah dapat mengetahui bahwa

Jaka Samudra bukanlah anak sembarangan. Dia memiliki kecerdasan di atas rata-rata santri

lainnya. Semua pelajaran yang diberikan, mampu ia serap dengan cepat.

Pada suatu malam, ketika hendak mengambil air wudu untuk melaksanakan salat

tahajud, Sunan Ampel melihat para santrinya yang tidur di asrama. Salah satu tubuh santrinya

memancarkan sinar terang dan mengejutkan Sunan Ampel. Sunan Ampel segera mengikat

ujung kain santri tersebut.

Keesokan harinya, Sunan Ampel memanggil para santrinya.

”Murid-muridku, ketika kalian bangun pagi, siapa kain sarung kalian yang terikat?”

Setelah lama terdiam, tiba-tiba Jaka Samudera mengacungkan tangannya sambil berkata,

“Hamba Kiai.”

Sunan Ampel semakin yakin kalau Jaka Samudra bukanlah anak sembarangan.

Kebetulan saat itu Nyai Ageng Pinatih datang menjenguk Raden Jaka Samudra. Kesempatan

itu digunakan Sunan Ampel untuk menanyakan siapa sebenarnya Jaka Samudra.

Nyai Ageng Pinatih menceritakan dengan jujur bahwa Jaka Samudra bukan anak

kandungnya melainkan anak yang dipungut oleh awak perahu kapalnya di tengah Selat Bali.

Mendengar cerita Nyai Ageng, Sunan Ampel datang ke Gresik untuk melihat peti yang dulu

digunakan membuang Jaka Samudra. Melihat peti tersebut Sunan Ampel semakin yakin

kalau Jaka Samudra adalah putra Syekh Maulana Ishak. Sesuai pesan Syekh Maulana Ishak,

nama Jaka Samudra pun diganti menjadi Raden Paku.

Beberapa tahun kemudian, Raden Paku atau Jaka Samudra tumbuh menjadi seorang

temaja yang sangat tampan dan berhati baik. Dia sangat akrab dengan teman-temannya,

lebih-lebih dengan putra Sunan Ampel yang bernama Raden Makdum Ibrahim. Keduanya

bagai saudara kandung, saling menyayangi dan saling mengingatkan. Setelah berusia enam

belas tahun, Sunan Ampel memanggil mereka.

"Hai Anakku berdua, sekarang sudah saatnya kalian menimba ilmu yang lebih tinggi ke

negeri Pasai. Di sana ada seorang ulama besar bergelar Syekh Awwalul Islam atau Syekh

Maulana Ishak, temuilah dia dan minta petunjuk kepadanya,”

Sunan Ampel tidak memberitahukan siapa sebenarnya yang mereka cari, yang tidak lain

adalah ayah kandung Raden Paku. Setelah menyiapkan segala sesuatunya, kedua pemuda itu

berangkat menuju Pasai. Tidak lama kemudian mereka pun tiba di Pasai. Kedatangannya

disambut gembira oleh Syekh Maulana Ishak. Raden Paku menceritakan perjalanan hidupnya

sewaktu masih bayi hingga diangkat anak oleh Nyai Ageng Pinatih dan berguru kepada

Sunan Ampel. Syekh Maulana Ishak pun menceritakan perjalanannya ketika menyebarkan

agama Islam hingga ke Blambangan dan bertemu dengan istrinya. Karena suatu hal Syekh

Maulana terpaksa meninggalkan istrinya yang sedang mengandung. Raden Paku menangis

mendengar cerita ayahnya dan memikirkan bagaimana keadaan ibunya sekarang. Raden Paku

bersumpah akan membalas perbuatan orang-orang terhadap keluarganya. Akan tetapi, Syekh

Maulana Ishak dapat meredakan kemarahan Raden Paku.

“Anakku, kita boleh saja membalas perbuatan jahat seseorang, tetapi memberi maaf itu

lebih baik.” Karena nasihat ayahnya itu, Raden Paku mengurungkan niatnya untuk membalas

dendam.

Setelah dianggap cukup mendalami pelajaran agama, Raden Paku diizinkan kembali ke

Jawa. Maulana Ishak memberi bungkusan kain putih yang isinya tanah dan berpesan agar

Raden Paku mencari tanah yang memiliki bau sama untuk mendirikan pesantren.

Kedua pemuda itu meninggalkan Pasai menuju Pulau Jawa. Raden Paku menceritakan

pertemuannya dengan ayahnya, Maulana Ishak, kepada Sunan Ampel. Sunan Ampel pun

merasa lega karena tujuannya tercapai.

"Anakku Raden Paku, karena sudah cukup engkau menimba ilmu, sudah waktunya

engkau kembali ke Gresik membantu ibumu sambil menyebarkan agama Islam.”

"Baiklah Kiai, Ananda mengikuti nasihat Kiai. Ananda mohon doa restu.”

Pada usia 23 tahun Raden Paku disuruh ibunya, Nyai Ageng Pinatih, mengawal barang

dagangan ke Banjarmasin. Nakhoda kapal diserahkan kepada Abu Hurariah. Tugas itu

dilaksanakan dengan senang hati dan mereka pun berangkat meninggalkan Pelabuhan Gresik

menuju Kalimantan, Biasanya, dagangan yang dibawa dari Gresik habis terjual dan

pulangnya membawa kembali barang dagangan yang dibutuhkan di Jawa. Akan tetapi,

setelah kapal merapat di Pelabuhan Banjar, Raden Paku tidak langsung menjual

dagangannya, tapi membagi-bagikannya kepada masyarakat yang membutuhkan. Kebetulan

saat itu di daerah tersebut sedang dilanda bencana. Abu Hurariah merasa cemas. “Raden, kita

akan mendapat murka dari Nyai Ageng. Mengapa barang dagangan dibagi cuma-cuma

kepada penduduk?”

“Jangan khawatir Paman, penduduk Banjar lagi dilanda musibah, ibu tidak akan marah

karena kita sudah banyak mengambil keuntungan dari mereka. Sudah waktunya ibu

membersihkan hartanya dengan membayar zakat kepada mereka, Paman jangan khawatir,”

jawab Raden Paku dengan tenangnya. "Supaya kapal tidak oleng, isilah karung-karung itu

dengan batu dan pasir, Paman.”

“Baiklah Raden.”

Para awak kapal pun mengikuti saran Raden Paku. Setelah melakukan perjalanan yang

cukup jauh, tibalah mereka di Pelabuhan Gresik. Abu Hurariah menceritakan apa yang

dilakukan Raden Paku kepada Nyai Ageng Pinatih. Hal itu membuat Nyai Ageng Pinatih

marah dan memanggil Raden Paku.

“Apa yang kamu lakukan Anakku, apakah betul yang diceritakan Abu Hurariah?”

' Raden Paku dengan tenang berkata, “Ibu jangan marah dulu, lihatlah isi karung-karung

itu.”

“Bukankah isinya batu dan pasir?” tanya Nyai Ageng Pinatih dengan nada tinggi sambil

mengeluarkan isi karung-karung itu. Betapa kagetnya Nyai Ageng Pinatih karena karung-

karung itu berisi barang dagangan yang biasa dibawa dari Kalimantan, seperti damar, karet,

dan rotan. Jumlahnya pun lebih besar dari yang diberikan kepada penduduk setempat

sehingga membuat Nyai Ageng bahagia.

Beberapa tahun kemudian, Raden Paku ingin berkunjung ke Pesantren Ampeldenta.

Dalam perjalanan, ia melewati pekarangan rumah Ki Ageng Bungkul, seorang bangsawan

keturunan Raja Majapahit, Tiba-tiba kepalanya kejatuhan buah delima yang tumbuh di

halaman rumah Ki Ageng Bungkul. Kejadian itu dilihat oleh Ki Ageng Bungkul yang

kemudian mencegatnya.

“Hai, siapa kamu. Kamu harus menikahi putriku, Dewi Wardah.”

“Apa? Menikah dengan putrimu? Aku tidak kenal putrimu.”

Raden Paku pun terkejut melihat sikap Ki Ageng Bungkul yang tiba-tiba berkata

demikian. Ternyata, Ki Ageng Bungkul sedang mengadakan sayembara yang menyatakan

barang siapa dapat menjatuhkan buah delima itu dengan selamat, akan dinikahkan dengan

putrinya.

Ucapan Ki Ageng Bungkul membuat bingung Raden Paku karena ia sudah bertunangan

dengan Dewi Murtasiah, putri Sunan Ampel. Raden Paku tidak dapat berbuat banyak dan ia

diberi waktu tiga hari untuk memberi jawaban.

Setibanya di Ampeldenta, Raden Paku menceritakan peristiwa tersebut. Di luar

dugaannya, Sunan Ampel menanggapinya dengan tenang.

“Raden, nikahilah gadis itu!”

“Bagaimana saya bisa menikahi perempuan yang tidak saya cintai, Kiai, bahkan kenal

pun tidak?"

“Raden jangan takut karena memang sudah takdir Raden memiliki dua istri."

“Bagaimana dengan Dewi Murtasiah?”

“Baiklah Kiai, perintah Kiai akan Ananda laksanakan,"

Setelah menikah, kehidupan Raden Paku sangat rukun dan bahagia dengan kedua

istrinya. Raden Paku semakin giat berdagang sambil menyebarkan agama Islam. Semakin

hari semakin banyak orang datang mohon wejangan-wejangannya, Karena pekarangan

rumahnya sudah tidak cukup lagi menampung tamu yang datang, Raden Paku memutuskan

mendirikan pesantren dengan mohon izin kepada ibu dan kedua istrinya,

Berkat restu dari orang-orang yang menyayanginya, Raden Paku melaksanakan pesan

ayahnya, Dengan membawa bungkusan tanah pemberian ayahnya, Raden Paku mengembara

mencari tanah yang memiliki bau yang sama dengan tanah yang ada dalam bungkusan

tersebut. Akhirnya sampailah Raden Paku di Desa Marganoto, di daerah perbukitan yang

hawanya sangat sejuk. Raden Paku mengeluarkan tanah dalam bungkusan lalu

mencocokannya dengan daerah tanah pebukitan tersebut. Ternyata bau tanah dalam

bungkusan sama dengan bau tanah di daerah tersebut. Akhirnya Raden Paku memutuskan

mendirikan pesantren di daerah perbukitan itu. Karena berada di daerah tinggi dan berbukit-

bukit, pesantren itu diberi nama Pesantren Giri. Pesantren itu dipimpin langsung oleh Raden

Paku sehingga Raden Paku mendapat sebutan Sunan Giri.
