Once, there was a boy named Jaka. He lived with his mother. His mother loved him very much. At times, other children teased him. They said he had no father. Jaka felt sad. But he was brave and kind.
One day, Jaka asked his mother. "Mother, who is my father?" His mother smiled. "Your father is a great leader," she said. She gave him a magic scarf. "This scarf is from him," she said. "Take it to him."
Jaka traveled far. He found his father's big house. Brother One and Brother Two were there. They were not happy to see Jaka. "You cannot come in," they said. Jaka showed them the magic scarf. "I have this," he said.
Their father came out. He saw the magic scarf. His eyes grew wide. "That scarf!" he said. "You are my son!" He hugged Jaka. It was a happy day.
The father had a test. "Clear the magic forest," he said. "Then I will know you are brave." Jaka was not scared. He had a magic spear from his grandpa. The spear glowed bright. The forest was friendly. Helpful spirits guided him. Jaka was kind to them.
He cleared the forest! His father was so proud. "You are now Sawunggaling," he said. "You belong here." All the people cheered.
Jaka learned his father had to go away. He went on a long trip to help others. Jaka missed him. But he remembered his father's kindness.
A contest was held. It was to choose a new leader. Brother One and Brother Two tried. They did not win. Jaka tried too. He helped all the people. He won the contest fairly. He became the new leader.
His brothers felt jealous. Their Uncle was with them. He also felt jealous. They made a mistake. They caused trouble. Jaka was sad. But he forgave them. He learned to be patient.

menceritakan siapa sebenarnya ayah Jaka Berek.
Suatu hari, Jaka Berek duduk termenung seorang diri di balai-balai rumahnya, wajahnya
terlihat sedih. Ketika bermain tadi, teman-temannya kembali mengejeknya sebagai anak
haram. Melihat putranya tampak murung, Dewi Sangkrah merasa kasihan dan segera
mendekatinya. Dengan penuh kasih, Dewi Sangkrah memeluk putranya.
“Putraku..,, maafkan Ibu. Karena Ibulah, kau sejalu diejek teman-temanmu," kata Dewi
Sangkrah.
"Kalau begitu, Bu, tolong beri tahu siapa sebenarnya ayahku,” pinta Jaka Berek sambil
berpaling menatap Ibunya.
"Baiklah, Anakku. Kamu sudah besar, Ibu rasa, sudah saatnya kamu tahu siapa
ayahmu...” jawab Dewi Sangkrah sambil menghela nafas .
“Ceritakanlah semuanya, Bu. Walaupun ayah sudah meninggal, aku bisa menerima.
Tapi, beri tahu di mana kuburnya supaya aku dapat melihatnya.”
"Ti...ti...dak, Anakku. Ayahmu masih hidup.”

"Benarkah, Bu? Di mana ia sekarang? Mengapa ia tidak menengok kita?” tanya Jaka
Berek bersemangat. Wajahnya mendadak cerah. Ia lepaskan pelukan ibunya dan seketika
berlutut di depan ibunya, "Bolehkan aku menemuinya?”
”Sabar Anakku...kau dapat menemuinya, tapi mungkin tidak mudah karena ayahmu
orang penting. Ayahmu adalah Adipati Surabaya,” jawab Dewi Sangkrah sambil memegang
bahu Jaka Berek.
Jaka Berek seketika terdiam. Terbayang ejekan teman-temannya. Ternyata ia bukan
anak haram. Ia punya ayah, bahkan seorang adipati. Dengan sabar, ia mendengarkan cerita
ibunya sejak awal pertemuannya dengan ayah hingga akhirnya terpaksa berpisah.
Setelah ibunya selesai bercerita, Jaka Berek minta izin untuk mencari ayahnya tersebut.
Dewi Sangkrah sangat berat melepas Jaka Berek pergi seorang diri, apalagi untuk bertemu
Adipati Surabaya. Dewi Sangkrah membekali Jaka Berek dengan selembar selendang atau
cinde Puspita untuk ditunjukkan kepada ayahnya sebagai bukti bahwa ia adalah anaknya.
“Bawalah cinde Puspita ini dan tunjukkan pada Adipati. Mudah-mudahan ia akan
mengenali cinde ini, Hati-hatilah, Nak,” kata Dewi Sangkrah berurai air mata.
Setelah mendapat restu ibunya, Jaka Berek segera meninggalkan rumah menuju
Kadipaten Surabaya. Beberapa potong pakaian dan makanan yang dibuntal dengan kain
tergantung di ujung batang kayu di atas pundaknya. Ia berjalan penuh semangat dan harapan
sehingga tidak merasa lelah. Bayangan akan bertemu dengan ayahnya membuatnya
bersemangat.
Setelah sampai di Kota Surabaya, Jaka Berek segera pergi ke kadipaten. Di pintu
gerbang kadipaten ia dihadang oleh dua orang prajurit bemama Sawungsari dan SaWungrana
yang merupakan putra Adipati Surabaya. Sawungrana dan Sawungsari tidak membolehkan
Jaka Berek masuk ke dalam kadipaten. Di sisi lain, Jaka Berek terus memaksa sehingga
terjadi perkelahian hebat antara Jaka Berek melawan Sawungsari dan Sawungrana.
Mendengar ada keributan di luar kadipaten, Adipati Surabaya yang bernama Jayengrana
kemudian keluar untuk melerai. Akhirnya perkelahian dapat dihentikan.
Setelah ketiganya disuruh duduk, Adipati Jayengrana menanyakan penyebab
perkelahian tersebut.
"Ada apa? Mengapa kalian berkelahi? Siapa pemuda ini?” tanya Adipati Jayengrana
kepada Sawungsari dan Sawungrana.
Sawungsari dan Sawungrana menceritakan bahwa ada anak bergama Jaka berek yang
hendak bertemu dengan Adipati Jayengrana dan mengaku sebagai anaknya. Sawungsari dan
Sawungrana menolak permintaan Jaka Berek sehingga terjadi perkelahian karena Jaka Berek
tetap memaksa masuk. Adipati sejenak terkejut sambil memandangi seorang pemuda yang
bersimpuh di depannya. Adipati Jayengrana kemudian menanyakan apakah Jaka Berek punya
bukti yang dapat menunjukkan bahwa ia memang anaknya.
”Anak muda, apa yang membuatmu yakin bahwa kau adalah putraku?” tanya Adipati
Jayengrana
Sesuai dengan pesan ibunya, Jaka Berek kemudian mengeluarkan cinde Puspita dari
dalam bajunya. ”Tbu hamba menyuruh hamba memberikan cinde ini kepada Adipati,” jawab
Jaka Berek sambil menyerahkan cinde Puspita.
Seketika wajah Adipati Jayengrana tampak sangat terkejut. Ia teringat pada istri
keduanya yang telah ditinggalkannya. Ia yang telah memberikan cinde itu kepadanya.
Meskipun sudah dapat membuktikan dirinya sebagai anaknya, Adipati Jayengrana masih

menghendaki Jaka Berek membuktikan kesaktiannya dengan membuka Hutan Wonokromo
yang terkenal angker karena merupakan tempatnya para dedemit dan binatang buas.
”Aku tidak percaya. Kau atau Ibumu mungkin telah mencurinya dari orang lain supaya
aku percaya bahwa kau anakku. Aku akan mengakuimu sebagai putraku jika kau dapat
membuka Hutan Wonokromo,” kata Adipati Jayengrana sambil menatap Jaka Berek.
"Baiklah, Adipati. Hamba akan mengalikan perintah Adipati,” jawab Jaka Berek
dengan penuh percaya diri.
”Anak muda, jika kau tidak berhasil menjalankan perintah ini, kau tidak perlu kembali
kesini. Sudah jelas, kau bukan putraku,” kata Adipati Jayengrana
Setelah mendengar peringatan Adipati Jayengrana, Jaka Berek segera minta diri
meninggalkan kadipaten menuju Hutan Wonokromo yang angker. Berkat tombak pusaka
Bliring pemberian kakeknya, Jaka Berek dapat menundukkan Hutan Wonokromo. Dengan
keberhasilan itu, Adipati Jayengrana dapat menerima Jaka Berek sebagai anaknya dan
kemudian mengganti namanya menjadi Sawunggaling. Jaka Berek kemudian tinggal di
dalam kadipaten bersama Sawungsari dan Sawungrana. Adipati Jayengrana sangat sayang
kepada Jaka Berek karena keberanian dan kehalusan budinya. Tabiatnya sangat berlawanan
dengan Sawungsari dan Sawungrana.
Setelah tinggal di dalam kadipaten, Sawunggaling dapat mengetahui segala persoalan
yang dihadapi ayahnya, antara lain perlawanan Adipati Jayengrana terhadap Belanda yang
membuat ayahnya akhirnya diberhentikan dari jabatannya sebagai adipati di Surabaya.
Karena takut akan memengaruhi rakyatnya, Adipati Jayengrana akhirnya dibunuh dengan
cara diracun dalam perjalanannya ke Kota Solo oleh Belanda dengan memanfaatkan saudara
Jayengrana, yaitu Sosrodiningrat, yang berambisi menggantikan kekuasaan Jayengrana
menjadi adipati di Surabaya. Setelah kematian Adipati Jayengrana, terjadi kekosongan
kepemimpinan di Kadipaten Surabaya. Oleh karena itu, pemerintahan kerajaan di Solo
menyelenggarakan sayembara memanah bendera untuk mencari pemimpin yang akan
mengisi kekosongan Adipati Surabaya.
Sebagai putra adipati, Sawungrana dan Sawungsari berangkat ke Solo untuk mengikuti
sayembara tersebut. Akan tetapi, keduanya tidak berhasil. Secara diam-diam, atas izin dan
restu ibunya, Sawunggaling berangkat ke Solo untuk mengikuti sayembara yang sama.
Berkat doa Dewi Sangkrah, Sawunggaling berhasil memenangkan sayembara sehingga
kemudian diangkat menjadi Adipati Surabaya menggantikan ayahnya dengan gelar
Sawunggaling Kulmak Sasranegara yang artinya pahlawan dari tanah Jawa yang
menggenggam seribu negara menjadi satu, bersama memajukan bangsa. Sawunggaling
kemudian dinikahkan dengan Nini Sekar Kedaton, putra Amangkurat Mas.
Melihat keberhasilan Sawunggaling, Sawungrana dan Sawungsari merasa iri hati.
Mereka bekerja sama dengan Sosrodiningrat yang juga mengincar jabatan adipati. Mereka
terus menerus merongrong kepemimpinan Sawunggaling. Karena Sawunggaling meneruskan
jejak ayahnya menentang Belanda, Belanda pun ikut bekerja sama dengan Sawungsari,
Sawungrana, dan Sosrodiningrat mengacaukan wilayah Kadipaten Surabaya untuk
merongrong kewibawaan Sawunggaling. Di dalam lingkungan kadipaten juga terjadi
perselisihan dan perpecahan sehingga keadaan tidak tenteram. Meskipun demikian, rakyat
Surabaya tetap mendukung kepemimpinan Sawunggaling. Bersama rakyat Surabaya yang
setia, Sawunggaling melakukan perlawanan terhadap Belanda. Di beberapa wilayah terjadi

rakyatnya kalah dalam hal persenjataan dan perlengkapan perang lainnya. Di samping itu,
berkat intrik-intrik yang dilakukan saudara dan pamannya, terjadilah pengkhianatan.
Sawungsari dan Sawungrana memberitahukan kepada Belanda tempat-tempat pertahanan
tentara Sawunggaling. Perlawanan Sawunggaling akhirnya dipatahkan oleh tentara Belanda.
Sawunggaling terdesak mundur hingga ke Madura. Di Madura ia mendapat bantuan dari
Adipati Madura untuk menghadapi tentara Belanda yang terus mengejarnya. Berkat bantuan
tentara Madura itu, Sawunggaling melakukan perlawanan untuk merebut kembali kota
Surabaya. Sawunggaling berjuang dengan gigih hingga berhasil masuk kembali ke kota
Surabaya. Akan tetapi, di daerah Kupang, Sawunggaling berhasil dikepung hingga posisinya
sangat terjepit. Meskipun sudah sangat terjepit karena dikepung dari berbagai arah,
Sawunggaling pantang menyerah. Ia menghilang atau moksa, jasadnya tidak pernah
diketemukan.
