MUSTAN MEREN MERIMIES
by Zacharias Topelius · from Lukemisia lapsille 5
Adapted Version
Let me tell you about Niku. Niku is a happy brush. He loves to play.
On a big ship, there are sailors. They are brave and happy. They sing songs all day. Sailors sing. Sailors smile. They are never sad. The sun shines on the ship. The sea is blue and calm.
Niku is a little brush. He works on the ship. Niku is clever and fast. He is very happy. He loves to play. He helps paint the ship. He helps keep it clean.
Niku sees black paint. He jumps in! Splash! He comes out with black feet. He is all black now. Like the dark night. But Niku is happy. He laughs and plays. Can you see Niku? He is so black!
Niku hops like a bird. Hop, hop, hop! Black prints on the white deck. He runs and hops. He paints the deck with his feet. He loves his black paint. The prints look like little stars.
Sometimes Niku makes a mess. He gets a soft tap. "Be careful, Niku!" But Niku is still happy. He tries again. He wants to do good work. He wants to help his friends.
After playing, Niku gets cleaned. The sailors wash him. They put a soft wool sweater on him. Niku feels warm and clean. He is ready to play again! He feels fresh and new.
Niku plays with children. He draws fun shapes for them. He draws letters in their books. The children laugh. They love Niku! Can you draw with Niku? He makes learning fun.
The children ask, "Who is Niku?" He waves a flag. Look! Niku is a happy brush!
Niku jumps into the paint again. Splash! He comes out writing. He writes, "Good morning!" What a happy brush! The letters are big and bright.
Niku shows us playing is fun. We must also clean up when done.
Original Story
MUSTAN MEREN MERIMIES.
Kas meripojat, niitä
Ei pelko painakkaan!
Maan ympäri he kiitää
Ja lappaa touvejaan.
Kun meri pauhaa, myrskysää
Touveihin, mastoon yllättää,
Niin laulaa lauluansa
Iloisin mielin nää.
Mies mustan meren laivan
On Niku nokkela;
Niin ketterä hän aivan,
Ett'ei vois uskoa.
Kas, kuin hän hyppää uimaankin,
Ja mustana käy takaisin
Kuin musta meri, mutta
Sydämmin iloisin.
Hän laivan valkokantta
Nyt "hyppii varista"'
Ja mustat merkit antaa
Jaloistaan tihkua.
Niin varpait' tulee variksen.
Mutt ei ol' orja Nikunen,
Merensä mustan, rakkaan
Hän maalaa kaikillen.
Hän joskus töhrää, milloin
Pitäisi koristaa;
Paperipätkin silloin
Selkäänsä Niku saa.
Vaan joskus, uljaast' uituaan.
Kauniisti kantta juostuaan.
Hän pannaan villapaitaan
Ja puhtaaks siivotaan.
Hän teräksisin kengin.
Puusäärin astelee
Ja pojan, tyttösenkin
Keralla leikitsee.
Kun hän on hauska veikkonen,
Hän piirtää kirjaan lapsien
A:n sauvoin kulkevaisen.
B:n köyryselkäisen.
Käy, Niku, tähän laivaan
Nyt lippus nostamaan!
Laps-pienet päätään vaivaa,
Ken Niku olleekaan.
Hän on… No, kappas juonta sen!
Taas pulskahti hän merehen,
Kirjoittain noustuansa:
Huomenta, pienonen!

Characters
Niku ★ protagonist
A nimble and agile brush, often appearing 'black as the Black Sea' after its work. It is described as having 'steel shoes' (likely the metal ferrule) and 'wooden legs' (the handle). It leaves black marks from its 'feet' (bristles).
Attire: When cleaned, it is 'put into a wool shirt' (perhaps a cloth cover or a soft cleaning process). Otherwise, its 'clothing' is its natural bristles and handle.
Wants: To perform its duty of cleaning and painting (leaving marks), to play, and to bring joy, particularly to children.
Flaw: Can sometimes 'smudge' when it should be decorating, leading to it being 'hit on the back with paper scraps' (a gentle reprimand).
Niku's arc is cyclical, moving between being dirty from work and being cleaned, always returning to its playful and useful nature. It consistently brings joy and a touch of education.
Clever, nimble, happy-hearted, playful, sometimes messy but capable of being cleaned and doing good work. It enjoys its tasks and interacting with children.
