PAIMENTYTTÖ
by Zacharias Topelius · from Lukemisia lapsille 3
Adapted Version
One sunny morning, Anna took her cows to the forest. The day was bright and happy. Her clothes were thin. The wind sang in the trees. Hello, forest! Hello, trees! Hei, heijuu, hei! All the branches sang.
Anna had bread in her bag. She was not worried. The cows walked to the green field. A big tree watched her. A little stream sang a happy song. Hello, stream! Hello, tree! Hei, heijuu, hei! All the branches sang.
Anna sat on soft flowers. She picked some yellow ones. She thought about her mom. Her mom was away. Anna missed her a little. Then she felt happy again. Hello, flowers! Hello, sun! Hei, heijuu, hei! All the branches sang.
The day got hot. A cow named Bessie got stuck. Oh no! Bessie was in the mud! She could not move. The mud was like a big puddle. Hello, mud! Hello, Bessie! Hei, heijuu, hei! All the branches sang.
Anna helped Bessie. She pulled and pulled. Bessie was heavy. But Anna was strong. She pulled Bessie out! Bessie was safe. Hello, Bessie! Hello, help! Hei, heijuu, hei! All the branches sang.
Then a bear came. His name was Bruno. He was big and fuzzy. He gave a soft growl. Hello, Bruno! Hello, bear! Hei, heijuu, hei! All the branches sang.
Anna was brave. She clapped her hands. "Go away, Bruno!" she said. Bruno walked away. He was shy. Bye-bye, Bruno! Bye-bye, bear! Hei, heijuu, hei! All the branches sang.
Anna was strong. She was not afraid. She loved the forest. She loved her friends. I am brave! I am kind! Hei, heijuu, hei! All the branches sang.
Someone watches over us. We are safe and happy. Anna was brave and kind. She loved her forest friends. Hei, heijuu, hei! All is well today.
Original Story
PAIMENTYTTÖ.
Mä läksin ulos aamulla,
Kun kirkas päivä koitti.
Ohuissa olin vaatteissa,
Ja tuuli metsää soitti.
Tie ohitseni luisti vain,
Ja metsä juoksi vastahain.
Hei, heijuu, hei!
Ja soi joka ainoa oksa
Pussissa oli leipänen
Ja uljuutta, ei huolta.
Ja karja kulki korpehen
Harjumme tätä puolta.
Mua suuri kuusi katseli,
Ja puro riemuin lauleli.
Hei, heijuu, hei!
Ja soi joka ainoa oksa.
Kanerviin istuin kankaallen
Sukkaani kutomahan
Ja mietin, onko yhtään, ken
Mua ehtii muistamahan.
Niin muistin äiti vainajaa…
Ken kotona nyt asustaa?…
Hei, heijuu, hei!
Ja soi joka ainoa oksa.
Tulipa kuuma päivä, kas!
Kärpästä lensi, parmaa.
Vajosi suohon kellokas;
Ei kättä vahvaa, varmaa.
Hei, tartuin silloin sarviin sen,
Se kirkontornin painoinen.
Hei, heijuu, hei!
Ja soi joka ainoa oksa.
Kun lehmä pääsi kuivallen,
Niin otso näkyi tiellä.
Löin häntä; hänpä ymmärs sen,
Hän seisoi ujomiellä.
Pois lötkötti hän viitaan päin:
Mitäpä hän mun lehmälläin?
Hei, heijuu, hei!
Ja soi joka ainoa oksa.
Hei, sadetta en pelkää vain
Ja nälkää kanssa karjan!
On pehmyt lato suojanain:
Punaisen poimin marjan;
Purosta kahvimyllyn saan;
Jumala muistaa poloistaan.
Hei, heijuu, hei!
Ja soi joka ainoa oksa.

Characters
The Herdswoman ★ protagonist
Slender but strong, accustomed to physical labor in the harsh Finnish wilderness. Her movements are agile and efficient from navigating uneven terrain and handling livestock. Her hands are likely calloused from work.
Attire: Simple, practical Finnish peasant attire suitable for herding in the early morning. She wears 'thin clothes' (ohuet vaatteet), suggesting a linen or homespun wool shift dress, possibly with a simple apron over it. Her clothing would be in muted, natural colors like undyed linen, grey, or faded blue, designed for durability and ease of movement rather than adornment. She would wear sturdy, low-heeled leather shoes or possibly go barefoot in summer.
Wants: To care for her herd, survive in the wilderness, and find a sense of belonging or purpose despite her solitude.
Flaw: Her solitude and the occasional pangs of loneliness or longing for connection.
She starts the day with a sense of duty and a touch of melancholy, faces and overcomes several challenges, and ends with a renewed sense of resilience and faith in divine protection, embracing her life in the wilderness.
Brave, resilient, self-reliant, resourceful, and a bit melancholic. She faces challenges head-on (rescuing the cow, confronting the bear) and finds solace in nature, but also reflects on her deceased mother and loneliness.

The Cow ◆ supporting
A large, sturdy dairy cow, likely a traditional Finnish breed, with a heavy bell around its neck. Its coat could be white, brown, or a mottled pattern, typical of hardy northern cattle. It is heavy, described as 'kirkontornin painoinen' (heavy as a church tower) when stuck in the bog.
Attire: A large, brass or bronze cowbell on a leather strap around its neck.
Wants: To graze and follow the herd.
Flaw: Its size and lack of self-preservation instincts when encountering hazards like bogs.
Gets into trouble by sinking into a bog, is rescued by the herdswoman, and then becomes a target for the bear, further highlighting the herdswoman's protective nature.
Docile and somewhat clumsy, prone to wandering and getting into trouble, but ultimately reliant on the herdswoman.
