The Old Man and His Grandson
by Brothers Grimm · from Household Tales
Adapted Version
Grandfather was very old. His hands shook a little. His hair was white. He lived with his son.
Father and Mother lived there too. The little boy lived there too. Grandfather loved the little boy. He told him stories at night.
He held the boy's hand. They sat near the fire. They looked at the big table. The house felt warm and safe.
But Father and Mother were busy. They were grumpy some days. "Sit there," Father said. He gave Grandfather a small table.
The small table stood in back. Grandfather sat there at meals. He ate from a little bowl. He ate by himself there.
Grandfather looked at the big table. He saw Father and Mother there. He saw the little boy there. Then he looked at his bowl.
The little boy saw him look. The little boy stayed very still. He did not say a word. He held his spoon tight.
One day, Grandfather held his bowl. His hands shook a little. The bowl fell from his hands. Crash! It broke on the floor.
Little bits lay on the floor. Grandfather looked down at them. His face looked sad and small. He did not lift his head.
Mother looked at the bowl. She frowned at the floor. "Oh no," she said. Her voice was grumpy and cold.
She gave him a wooden bowl. It was plain and hard. Grandfather held the new bowl. He said not one word.
The little boy watched it all. He watched Grandfather sit alone. He saw the wooden bowl. He saw Grandfather's sad face.
He looked at Mother. He looked at Father. Then he looked at Grandfather. He sat very still then.
One day, the little boy sat down. Small bits of wood lay near. He put them on the floor. He worked and worked there.
He made one side first. Then he made one more side. His small hands moved fast. His face looked set and still.
Father saw the little boy. "What are you making?" Father asked. The little boy looked up. He gave a small smile.
"I am making a bowl," the little boy said. "A bowl for you and Mama. For when you are old."
Father looked at Mother then. Mother looked at Father then. They said not one word. Their eyes grew wet fast.
Mother put her hand down. Father looked at the floor. Then they looked at Grandfather. His head was still low.
Father went to Grandfather. He took his hand softly. "Come sit with us," he said. He led him to the table.
Mother brought a nice new bowl. She set it by his plate. Then she gave him warm soup. She gave him soft bread too.
Grandfather looked up at them. A small smile came back. The little boy sat near him. He held Grandfather's hand tight.
They all ate at the table. The food was warm and good. The room felt soft and calm. No one spoke in a grumpy voice.
When Grandfather spilled a little, they helped him at once. Mother wiped the table clean. Father filled his bowl again.
The little boy smiled at him. Grandfather smiled back at him. Then Father smiled too. Then Mother smiled too.
Day by day, they ate as one. Grandfather sat with them all. They helped him and smiled. And Grandfather smiled and smiled.
Original Story
The old man and his grandson
A fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm
There was once a very old man, whose eyes had become dim, his ears dull of hearing, his knees trembled, and when he sat at table he could hardly hold the spoon, and spilt the broth upon the table-cloth or let it run out of his mouth. His son and his son's wife were disgusted at this, so the old grandfather at last had to sit in the corner behind the stove, and they gave him his food in an earthenware bowl, and not even enough of it. And he used to look towards the table with his eyes full of tears. Once, too, his trembling hands could not hold the bowl, and it fell to the ground and broke. The young wife scolded him, but he said nothing and only sighed. Then they bought him a wooden bowl for a few half-pence, out of which he had to eat.
They were once sitting thus when the little grandson of four years old began to gather together some bits of wood upon the ground. "What are you doing there?" asked the father. "I am making a little trough," answered the child, "for father and mother to eat out of when I am big."
The man and his wife looked at each other for a while, and presently began to cry. Then they took the old grandfather to the table, and henceforth always let him eat with them, and likewise said nothing if he did spill a little of anything.
