Once there was a merchant. He sold many things at the market. He sold cups and cloth and soap. Now his bag was full of coins. He was very happy. He put his big bag on the horse. "Time to go home!" he said.

He stopped at a stable to rest. A boy came to look at the horse. He looked at its feet one by one. "Sir," the boy said softly. "A small nail is gone. It fell from this shoe." He pointed at the back foot.

The merchant waved his hand. "It will be fine," he said. He wanted to go home fast. "I must go now." He got on his horse. He rode away.

He stopped at one more stable to rest. One more boy came to see the horse. He looked at its feet. His eyes went wide. "Sir!" the boy said. "The whole shoe fell off! Your horse has no shoe now. I can take him to get help."

But the merchant waved his hand again. "It will be fine," he said again. He was in a hurry. He got on his horse. He rode away fast.

But soon the horse walked slow. Very, very slow. Its feet hurt on the hard road. Then the horse started to trip. It tripped again and again.

Then the horse stopped. It sat down on the road. It did not get up. Its foot hurt too much. The poor horse was too sore to walk.

The merchant led his horse to a tree. The horse sat in the shade. It ate some soft grass. It was safe and warm here.

The merchant picked up his big heavy bag. Oh, it was so heavy! He put it on his back. He walked and walked and walked. His back hurt. The bag was so heavy.

At last he got home. It was dark now. The stars were out. He was very, very tired. His feet hurt. His back hurt too.

The merchant sat down in his house. He was safe at home at last. But he was so tired. He sat and he thought. One small nail. That started it all. "One small nail did this." Next time, he will listen.

The nail

A fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm

A merchant had done good business at the fair; he had sold his wares, and lined his money-bags with gold and silver. Then he wanted to travel homewards, and be in his own house before nightfall. So he packed his trunk with the money on his horse, and rode away.

At noon he rested in a town, and when he wanted to go farther the stable-boy brought out his horse and said, "A nail is wanting, sir, in the shoe of its left hind foot." - "Let it be wanting," answered the merchant; "the shoe will certainly stay on for the six miles I have still to go. I am in a hurry."

In the afternoon, when he once more alighted and had his horse fed, the stable-boy went into the room to him and said, "Sir, a shoe is missing from your horse's left hind foot. Shall I take him to the blacksmith?" - "Let it still be wanting," answered the man; "the horse can very well hold out for the couple of miles which remain. I am in haste."

He rode forth, but before long the horse began to limp. It had not limped long before it began to stumble, and it had not stumbled long before it fell down and broke its leg. The merchant was forced to leave the horse where it was, and unbuckle the trunk, take it on his back, and go home on foot. And there he did not arrive until quite late at night. "And that unlucky nail," said he to himself, "has caused all this disaster."

Hasten slowly.
