The Crumbs on the Table
by Brothers Grimm · from Household Tales
Adapted Version
Three little puppies lived in a house. It was a nice house. It had a big kitchen. The kitchen had a big table. They had one rule. Do not eat from the table.
One day, a man came inside. He saw crumbs on the table. "Come, puppies!" the man said. "Eat the crumbs! They are good!"
The puppies looked at the table. They looked at each other. "No, no!" the puppies said. "We cannot eat that! The owner will be sad. We will make her upset."
The man smiled. "She is not here," the man said. "She will not know. The crumbs are so yummy! Come and eat!"
The puppies shook their heads. "No, no!" the puppies said. "We cannot eat that. We must follow the rules."
But the man did not stop. "Come, come!" the man said. "Just a little bite! One small bite is all." The puppies looked at the crumbs. The crumbs did look good. They smelled good too. The puppies looked at each other. They were not sure. "Maybe just a little," they said. "Just one small bite."
The puppies jumped on the table. They ate the crumbs. The crumbs were yummy! The puppies wagged their tails. They ate more crumbs. They were happy.
But then the door opened. The owner was home! She stood in the door. She looked at the kitchen. She saw the puppies. She saw the table. The table was a mess.
"Bad puppies!" the owner said. Her voice was loud and firm. "You ate my crumbs!" The owner shook her head. "You broke the rules!" The puppies put their ears down. They felt bad. They were very sad. "Go outside now," the owner said. The puppies went outside. They walked with their heads down.
The puppies were sad. They found the man. "You told us to eat!" the puppies said. "Now we are in trouble. The owner is upset with us!"
The man looked at them. He did not care. "I told you to eat," he said. "That is all." Then he walked away. He did not look back.
The puppies sat together. They were sad. But now they knew. They should have said no. Next time, they would say no. They would follow the rules.
Original Story
The crumbs on the table
A fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm
A countryman one day said to his little puppies: "Come into the parlour and enjoy yourselves, and pick up the bread-crumbs on the table; your mistress has gone out to pay some visits." Then the little dogs said: "No, no, we will not go. If the mistress gets to know it, she will beat us." The countryman said: "She will know nothing about it. Do come; after all, she never gives you anything good." Then the little dogs again said: "Nay, nay, we must let it alone; we must not go." But the countryman let them have no peace until at last they went, and got on the table, and ate up the bread-crumbs with all their might. But at that very moment the mistress came, and seized the stick in great haste, and beat them and treated them very hardly. And when they were outside the house, the little dogs said to the countryman: "Dost, dost, dost, dost, dost thou see?" Then the countryman laughed and said: "Didn't, didn't, didn't, you expect it?" So they just had to run away.
