Once, two sisters lived in a town. Anna had a big house. She had lots of bread. Lena had a small house. She had many children.

One cold night, the children were hungry. So hungry. Their tummies rumbled and rumbled. The plates were empty. There was no food. The children looked at Lena. Lena looked at the plates.

Lena walked to Anna's big house. The night was very cold. She knocked on the door. Anna opened it. "Please, sister," Lena said. "We are so hungry. Can you give us bread?"

Anna looked at Lena. "No," Anna said. "I have no bread for you." Anna closed the door. Lena stood very still. Then she walked home. She felt very sad. The walk was long and cold.

Karl came home. He was hungry too. He picked up a knife. He cut the bread.

A red thing came out. It came out like magic. Karl was very surprised. He looked at the bread. He looked at Anna. He looked at the bread again.

Anna felt scared. "Lena asked for bread," she said. "I said no." Karl looked sad. "We must help them," he said.

Karl ran to Lena's house. He carried bread and food. He ran very fast. He ran and ran.

He opened the door. The house was cold. Lena sat very still. She held her little children. They were so weak. So tired. So still. Lena said a quiet prayer.

Karl gave Lena the food. Lena looked up. "Thank you," she said. Her eyes were sad. The children ate the warm bread. They ate and ate. Karl felt sorry. He saw how much they hurt.

Then Anna came too. She stood at the door. She looked at the children. She looked at Lena. "I am sorry, sister," Anna said. Her voice was very small. Lena held her hand.

The children ate more bread. They drank warm water. They felt warm. They felt strong. They smiled again. Lena smiled too.

From that day, the two sisters shared. All the time. They shared bread. They shared food. The children were not hungry again.

And Anna shared her bread. That is what sisters do. Share what you have.

God's food

A fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm

There were once upon a time two sisters, one of whom had no children and was rich, and the other had five and was a widow, and so poor that she no longer had food enough to satisfy herself and her children. In her need, therefore, she went to her sister, and said, "My children and I are suffering the greatest hunger; thou art rich, give me a mouthful of bread." The very rich sister was as hard as a stone, and said, "I myself have nothing in the house," and drove away the poor creature with harsh words. After some time the husband of the rich sister came home, and was just going to cut himself a piece of bread, but when he made the first cut into the loaf, out flowed red blood. When the woman saw that she was terrified and told him what had occurred. He hurried away to help the widow and her children, but when he entered her room, he found her praying. She had her two youngest children in her arms, and the three eldest were lying dead. He offered her food, but she answered, "For earthly food have we no longer any desire. God has already satisfied the hunger of three of us, and he will hearken to our supplications likewise." Scarcely had she uttered these words than the two little ones drew their last breath, whereupon her heart broke, and she sank down dead.

Evening light filters through a cracked, grimy windowpane, casting long shadows across a bare wooden floor. The room is stark and cold, with peeling, water-stained wallpaper and a single threadbare blanket draped over a rickety wooden chair. A small, dying ember glows faintly in a soot-blackened fireplace, providing minimal warmth. Dust motes float in the dim light. A chipped enamel cup sits empty on a rough-hewn table beside a few withered potato peels. A single, drooping plant in a cracked pot on the windowsill struggles for life. The overall palette is desaturated, with muted browns, grays, and faded blues, emphasizing the pervasive poverty and stillness. no border, no frame, no watermark, no text, no signature, edge-to-edge illustration
