Frau Trude
by Brothers Grimm · from Household Tales
Adapted Version
Once there is a little girl. Her name is Lily. She does not like to listen. Mama says, "Eat your soup." Lily says no. Papa says, "Come inside." Lily does not come.
Near the town there is a house. It has dark windows. The roof is old and crooked. Weeds grow by the door. No one goes near it. Lily wants to see it. "I want to go there," she says.
"No," says Mama. "Do not go there." Papa shakes his head. "It is not safe," he says. They look at Lily with big eyes. "Please, Lily. Stay home."
But Lily does not listen. She walks to the old house. The path is dark. The trees are tall.
The door opens. An old woman stands there. She looks at Lily. "Why so afraid?" asks Old Frau Trude. Lily's hands shake. Her heart beats fast.
"I saw a big black cat," says Lily. "It sat on your steps."
"I saw a green bird," says Lily. "It sat on your roof."
"I saw a red fox," says Lily. "It ran by your door."
Old Frau Trude laughs. "That is just my cat," she says. "Just a bird." "Just a fox."
"But," says Lily. Her voice is small. "I looked in the window. I saw your face. You had glowing eyes. And a scary face."
Old Frau Trude smiles a slow smile. "Yes," she says. "You saw the real me. I am a witch."
Then Old Frau Trude waves her hand. Lily cannot move. She is frozen like a statue. She cannot talk. She cannot run. She is all alone.
But Mama and Papa look for Lily. They walk and walk. They call her name. "Lily! Lily!" They find the old house. "Give us back our girl!" says Papa. Mama holds up a bright light. The spell breaks. Lily can move again! She runs to Mama and Papa. She holds them tight. "I am sorry," says Lily. "I did not listen." "I will listen now." Mama holds one hand. Papa holds the other. They walk home.
And from that day, Lily always listens.
Original Story
Frau Trude
A fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm
There was once a little girl who was obstinate and inquisitive, and when her parents told her to do anything, she did not obey them, so how could she fare well? One day she said to her parents, "I have heard so much of Frau Trude, I will go to her some day. People say that everything about her does look so strange, and that there are such odd things in her house, that I have become quite curious!" Her parents absolutely forbade her, and said, "Frau Trude is a bad woman, who does wicked things, and if thou goest to her; thou art no longer our child." But the maiden did not let herself be turned aside by her parent's prohibition, and still went to Frau Trude. And when she got to her, Frau Trude said, "Why art thou so pale?" - "Ah," she replied, and her whole body trembled, "I have been so terrified at what I have seen." - "What hast thou seen?" - "I saw a black man on your steps." - "That was a collier." - "Then I saw a green man." - "That was a huntsman." - "After that I saw a blood-red man." - "That was a butcher." - "Ah, Frau Trude, I was terrified; I looked through the window and saw not you, but, as I verily believe, the devil himself with a head of fire." - "Oho!" said she, "then thou hast seen the witch in her proper costume. I have been waiting for thee, and wanting thee a long time already; thou shalt give me some light." Then she changed the girl into a block of wood, and threw it into the fire. And when it was in full blaze she sat down close to it, and warmed herself by it, and said, "That shines bright for once in a way."

Twilight descends upon Frau Trude's crooked cottage, nestled deep within a gnarled, ancient forest. A winding path of cracked, moss-eaten stone steps leads upward to a weathered, slanted door beneath a sagging porch roof. The house itself is a chaotic assembly of dark, warped timber and patched thatch, with windows glowing a faint, sickly yellow from within. Thick, clinging fog swirls around the base of the structure and between the twisted, leafless trees. The air is heavy with a damp, earthy chill, and the only light comes from the house's eerie glow and the last sliver of a pale, watery moon visible through the skeletal canopy. Colors are muted and desaturated: deep greys, shadowy browns, and sickly yellows. no border, no frame, no watermark, no text, no signature, edge-to-edge illustration.

An enormous, ancient stone fireplace dominates a vast, shadowy chamber. Deep night presses against tall, narrow windows. The hearth is a cavern of blackened stone, its mantle carved with grimacing faces. Within the fireplace, the last embers of a great fire glow a sullen, deep orange, casting a faint, pulsing light that dances across the soot-stained walls and the cold, flagstone floor. Wisps of grey ash and smoke curl lazily upward into the immense, soot-caked chimney. The air is thick with the scent of old woodsmoke and cold stone. no border, no frame, no watermark, no text, no signature, edge-to-edge illustration.
