GRIMM’S FAIRY TALES
by Brothers Grimm
Adapted Version
`★ Insight ─────────────────────────────────────` Two targeted fixes needed: (1) split a 9-word sentence into two ≤8-word sentences, and (2) expand from 304 to ~400 words while keeping A1/CEFR constraints. The expansion should add to existing scenes rather than introduce new ones — padding with sensory details and repeated patterns that match the story's rhythm. `─────────────────────────────────────────────────`
Here is the revised story:
---
One day, Mama Duck sat on eggs. Crack! Crack! Crack! Small yellow ducks came out. One, two, three, four! But one egg was very big. Crack! A big grey duckling came out. He was not yellow. He was not small. He looked around. Mama Duck looked at him. She looked again.
"Come, little ducks!" said Mama Duck. She was very busy. She had many babies. The other ducks looked at him. "You look funny," they said. They did not play with him. They played with each other. The little grey duckling was sad. He sat alone. He watched them play.
He wanted a friend. He walked and walked. He walked past the farm. He walked past the trees. "I will find a friend," he said.
He met a rabbit. The rabbit was small and brown. "Hello! Can I play?" he said. The rabbit hopped away. He met a bird. The bird was red and tiny. "Hello! Can I play?" he said. The bird flew away. He was alone. He sat by a tree. He looked at the sky.
Then winter came. Snow fell on the ground. The wind was cold. The trees had no leaves. The little grey duckling was cold. He was very cold. He was alone. He looked for a warm spot. He found warm hay in a barn. He sat in the hay. It was soft. He slept and slept. He waited for spring.
Then spring came! The sun was warm. The snow went away. Flowers grew. Red flowers. Yellow flowers. The water was blue. The little grey duckling looked up. He saw big white birds. They were on the water. They were so pretty! He wanted to say hello. He was a little scared. But he walked to the water. He was brave.
He looked down at the water. He saw a white bird. "Who is that?" he said. He looked again. It was him! He was not grey now. He was white! He was not a duck. He was a swan! He was a pretty swan!
The white swans saw him. They swam to him. "Come swim with us!" they said. "You are one of us!" He was so happy. He swam with them. He was white and pretty. He splashed the water. They splashed too! He had friends. He had a family. He was home.
